On the 24th of September I had the pleasure to participate to SmartWeb, the "first world class web conference in Eastern Europe", held in Bucharest.

Every year, XWiki SAS is organizing a seminar for all its employees during the summer. And every year, we take that opportunity to do a Hackathon during this seminar. This year was no exception! ...

XWiki has been accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2013.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We work with many open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 6,000 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. 

This is our 8th year participating in the program and we are pretty excited about it. We value the participation in the program since it allows us to meet and discuss ideas with smart students from around the world. The past years brought great results, such as the WebDAV and RESTful remote access APIs, the Office importer, and the whole XEclipse project, just to name a few.

This year we're proposing a lot of interesting projects, from Live Notifications to XCLAMS Federated Servers, beside our regular mentors also having the support of mentors from the XCLAMS community.

The student application period will last from April 22 until May 3, 19:00 UTC. Students interested in applying for a project with XWiki should:

• read the Google Summer of Code FAQ;
• read the XWiki specific guideline;
• look at the list of suggested projects and pick one or more favorite projects, or come up with a new project idea;
• start interacting with the community on the IRC channel;
• introduce themselves and their view of the selected project on the developers mailing list;
• apply as a student on the GSoC official site.

On 7 Apr 2012 we had the pleasure to hold a training about XWiki's Development Process to about 30 students, most of them from "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi, Romania. ...

In February 2012 we launched a Survey to gather information from the XWiki Community about you would like to see implemented in the XWiki 4.x development cycle. Note that we had a similar exercise in 2009 and we had posted the results.

This survey had 2 purposes:

• Find out the main Development Themes for XWiki 4.x.
• Have a pioritized feature list that we could pick for when we decide each specific roadmap for the 4.x releases (4.0, 4.1, etc).

The most voted themes were:

• Theme 1: Ease of use
• Theme 2: Quality

Jointly with us, the XWiki SAS company also did the same exercise asking the same questions to its customers. They have published the full results which aggregate both Community votes and Customers votes. You can also check out the Raw CSV Data.

We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to answer and thus who've helped drive the direction of XWiki!

In September 2009 the XWiki.org project ran a survey asking users what features they'd like to see developed in the XWiki project.

2.5 years after, here's the result of what's been implemented and what's still outstanding. Since we're going to start defining the themes for the XWiki Enterprise 4.x cycle (which lasts 1 year), it's a good time to reflect on the results achieved so far compared to the community feedback from 2009. 

The idea is to start a new survey real soon to gather feedback again about what you'd like to see in the XWiki Enterprise 4.x cycle.

So without further ado here are the results... ...

XWiki Enterprise & XWiki Enterprise 3.0 are being released and I wanted to share some stats with the Community.

XWiki Developers have fixed 510 issues during the XE/XEM 3.0 timeframe (i.e. between beginning of January 2011 and end of March 2011, that's 3 months - that's 6 issues per day including week ends, not bad!).

In order to provide a good visibility of the work done, who's worked on what, and more, we've created a JIRA Dashboard for XE/XEM 3.0.

From now on we'll try to provide such a dashboard for each major XE/XEM release. Let us know if it's useful to you and if you like it. Improvement suggestions are most welcome too. ...

This summer, Google organizes the seventh edition of the Google Summer of Code program:

 Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. We have worked with the open source community to identify and fund exciting projects for the upcoming summer.

A participant in GSoC since the first edition in 2005, XWiki was left out of the program last year to make way for newer and smaller open source projects, but is back as a mentoring organization this year, and we're ready to give a few lucky students a chance to learn how real world, open source development works in the middle of our wonderful community.

With five years of experience as a GSoC organization, our developers are seasoned mentors, ready to guide students through the entire process. Some students are already mixing in with the developers on our IRC channel, or introducing themselves and their project proposals on the mailing lists. We're very happy to meet and discuss ideas with these interesting students, and we can't wait to see what these collaborations can lead to, since every year we've had great results, such as the WebDAV and RESTful remote access APIs, the Office importer, and the whole XEclipse project, just to name a few.

This year we're proposing a lot of interesting projects, from hard core java to clientside javascript projects, and from mobile devices to the cloud. Of course, the poster child of our GSoC experiences, XEclipse, is ready to receive further improvements, and application development on top of XWiki is also present in this year's proposals.

It shows 2010 has been a good year with more releases than ever, even though the committer's activity has been slightly reduced in 2010 compared to 2009.
